Health Habits

Hello!  Welcome to what I am calling Health Habits.  I have decided to share personal experiences and basically habits I have picked up well and habits I just never picked up or found I will fail and try and try again.  â€‹

So example of what I managed in the past.  Somehow after I had my first baby (now 8 years old), I managed to get into a habit of walking.  Honestly, I have no idea how I got into this habit because I walked and hiked sometimes with my husband, but was never really in a habit of exercise daily.  Just wasn't a big interest for me.  I still wonder to this day how I managed this habit at all.  But I did.  Before I got pregnant with our second baby (now 2 years old), I was in a definite habit of daily walking.  If it was raining, I was on the treadmill.  Or at some point I also tried yoga - not sure if yoga is my thing yet.  And for the first few months or so, of this second pregnancy, I managed walking most 5 days a week, maybe up to 7, for when we went out places.  I was proud of myself.  But then my second trimester hit, and I had to have a procedure every few weeks to transfer blood to my unborn son who became anemic while in the belly.  Literally, he got the blood transfer, I just took the needle through my belly.  And this procedure pretty much took me out the remainder of my pregnancy.  I just couldn't manage to stay AS active as I would have liked.  Oh well, it's pregnancy...every woman and pregnancy is different.  ANYWAY... after my second baby was born, I was surprised despite the pain I had from my c-section (second c-section), I bounced back fairly quickly.  Two weeks after the surgery, I was out walking on my own and frankly I expected myself to be walking a month or more after giving birth.  My body felt the need for it sooner.  So I had done so good on my habit of walking, and even surprised my doctors with getting back into so soon.  I didn't speed walk.  I paced myself.  Hello...I just had major surgery to deliver another beautiful baby.  I was not in a rush to get my belly back down, get in some great shape, but it certainly felt great getting back into the walking routine so soon.  My husband was home, so he watched the baby.  After a week or two, I decided to try taking the new little guy out for a walk.  I discovered - though I managed - that I am not ready for pushing a stroller.  Carrying him felt like too much, so it had to be stroller or no go.  It worked my abs and not very comfortably.  I did it once and I was done until I felt like I could handle it again.

To this day, I remain in good habit with walking and even look forward to hikes (didn't always).  I still have phases of no walking, because something occurs that doesn't allow me to go walking.  Injury, sickness, willingness - sometimes I can just be too tired and not feel up to the walking.  But the bottom line is, when I feel good, I am back to walking.

So just remember when it comes to good and healthy habits, like exercise, your body could be in a great habit, but sometimes a pause hits and you have to let it go until your body feels mentally and physically ready.  Sometimes you may have to push yourself back into it, but sometimes you just have to listen to your body as well and understand maybe its not a good day yet; but it will feel great even if you feel the need to push yourself out the door or onto a treadmill.
